We’ve put together a series of social trail runs to get you off the roads and into Viti Levu’s dramatic interior
We’ve designed three single day trail runs each across rugged terrain, each possible on a weekend, and each requiring an overnight prior to the run, with the idea of providing a social cross-country running experience for those who like to cover the ground a bit faster.
Rules of engagement – our style of trail run!
The runs will be organised on as as-is basis with a limited number of spaces for up to 15 runners. They are not races and there are no prizes. Responsibility should be assumed to rest with each runner for their own safety and well-being, for arranging transport, for food, snacks and water, in some cases for accommodation. However, each run presents different options and Talanoa Treks’ vehicles will be able to carry some runners, and potentially provide a shuttle service, guide other vehicles, and carry water to some access points.
Each run is intended to be social, meaning we would run as a spread out group with regular stops to keep everyone together. Expect to walk up hills and run on the flat and down hills. Runners are more than welcome to run at a faster pace, but in so doing will be responsible for their own navigation. GPS tracks and maps can be provided.
There will be some costs associated with each run to cover payments to communities and some of our vehicle costs, but we’ll aim to keep these to a minimum as these aren’t commercial events.
Taking in over 1,300m of elevation gain, this circuit starts in Naga village right in the centre of Viti Levu and provides amazing ridge line views across the grassy hills of the upper Sigatoka and Ba watersheds. Following horse tracks, good gravel road, and requiring several river crossings, the run is dominated for two long ascents and descents.
Start point: Naga village (4hrs from Suva or Nadi; 4WD required)
End point: Naga village
Accommodation: camping or community hall in Naga village
Meals: gas burners will be available for self/group cooking
Following mostly clear horse tracks across the Yaqara beef estate as well as some gravel road, this route provides amazing views as you rise up from the coast, and skirt the western shoulder of the Nakauvadra range.
Start point: Nr Togavere village (3hrs from Suva or 2hrs from Nadi)
End point: Naseyani village (along the Fiji water factory road)
Accommodation: Tanoa Rakiraki, Beehive or around
Meals: Arranged with accommodation provider
A personal favourite, this route follows an old road base, now a horse track within an old beef farming estate. The track provides great ridge line running, and some forest shade, encounters broken bridges and cooling streams.
Start point: Korovou village on the Sigatokabeyond Keiyasi (3hrs from Suva or 2hrs from Nadi; 4WD required)
End point: Yalavou (the old beef ranch station; 2hr drive for support vehicles from start)
Accommodation: Camping outside Korovou village
Meals: bring your own gas burner or limited shared available for self/group cooking
